Hits & Squibs

Bullet, Dust, Debris Hits - We've got it covered

Pyrotechnic Bullet Hits & Squibs

Almost since the advent of motion pictures, the use of pyrotechnics and blood bags has been the staple for 90% of all bullet hit effects.  Whilst CGI has revolutionised making the impossible possible, most directors still prefer having a real effect to get the best reaction from the actors, which is not so easily obtained with CGI alone.

BloodyStuff provide two main types of Pyrotechnic Hit Squib systems - which can only be used & provided by our experienced technicians.

The Hit Kit - Quick to apply, constant results

The Shield Hit - Scaleable hits, low profile

Wireless Firing System - Perfect for Hits

PyroHIT Advantages

  • BIG and realistic blood, dust and debris Effects
  • Wireless, manual and fast auto-sequenced Triggering
  • Compact footprint, means multiple hits can be used on a single actor
  • Small or large calibre blood hit simulations
  • Fastest setups and re-sets in the business... can be done in the time it takes to change the actors wardrobe
  • Developed to be extremely safe and comfortable in use
  • Excellent haptics to stimulate the actor to give realistic reactions.
  • Best rates for crew and consumables in the UK

The Hit Kit - Pyro Squib System

Developed over many years by one of the most respected SFX designers of our time, BloodyStuff use the RogerGeorge pyro-squib solution, providing extremely fast setup and re-set times.  "If you've ever been filming and used all available pre-prepared blood-bags during a scene, then you will know that reset times can be painfully long (30 to 60 minutes at least)... which is a costly eternity when holding up all cast and crew for another take.  Our PYROsquib can be re-set from scratch in literally a few minutes and will consistently provide perfect and identical results.

The engineered filling and firing design permits the fastest setup and reset times in the industry and also has the benefit of being 100% repeatable in terms of the effect, as it's always exactly the same amount of blood and force/direction from the PYROsquib hit-cup.

Debris Hits

Both the Hit Kit and Hit Shield solutions can just as easily be used to create debris hits in sets and on locations and even bullet hits for mummies.

The Hit Shield - Pyro Squib System

A modern take on the traditional steel plate with pyro and blood bags attached, we use US manufactured, precision made shields (by Sweeney Special Effects)  that hold the pyrotechnic in place and to which our in-house made blood bags are then attached and further attached to the actor/wardrobe.   A highly advance, shock-absorbing material called sorbothene is then attached to the rear of the kit, to absorb any impact from the squib firing, ensuring complete comfort and safety for the actor.

The advantage this has over the Hit Kit option, is that they are lower in profile and we can pack them more densely together to get more hits in a localised area and we can create different sized blood bags for different levels of effect, from a single small calibre shot to a violent shotgun hit.

Our SFX technicians typically pre-make Hit Shield rigs, specific to the scene requirements and will make as many as required to cover rehearsals, takes and re-takes.

Debris Hits

Both the Hit Kit and Hit Shield solutions can just as easily be used to create debris hits in sets and on locations and even bullet hits for mummies.

Wireless Firing System

We combine our Hit Kit or Hit Shield system with a UK manufactured, highly sophisticated, wireless multi-channel firing system that's extremely quick to setup and is extremely reliable and compact, allowing one or more, 6-channel firing units to be easily concealed into the actors costume or strapped to the body / leg for up to 24 sequenced or simultaneous hits in a single take.

Whilst this is our most popular solution for Squibs and Hits, BloodyStuff SFX have a range of different wired and wireless Firing Solutions for different requirements and environments.

AirFX Squibs for Bullet Hits & Blood Loss

There is now an alternative to attaching a pyrotechnic squib to an actor for simulated bullet hits, this is particularly useful for nervous or inexperienced actors or crew or where budget won't allow the attended SFX technicians for the more traditional pyro bullet hits (see our solutions for SFX attended safe pyro squibs)

AirFX Squibs are "LPA" Low Pressure Air driven systems used to create non-explosive, totally safe squib hits and other safe blood (including cuts and slashes) and dust effects.  All our AirFX Squib units share the following benefits

  • Extremely realistic single blood hit or dust hit effects
  • Perfect for heavy loss throat cuts and slashes
  • Totally Safe to Rig & Use ...it's just air
  • No risk to Actors... NOTHING in their operation, wearing or use is remotely dangerous
  • No issues with HSE, Production or Insurance
  • Very little noise, means actors can "act" shot and not just surprised
  • Fast resets
  • Low consumables cost of just the blood for repeats and re-takes
  • Perfect for nervous actors
  • Control over the size of the effect
  • A max of 2 or 3 simultaneous bullet-hits is possible by using multiple AirFXSQUIBS units

Bullet Hits - 4 ways to achieve

Air-Powered Hit-Gun Squib Services

For sets and locations, pyrotechnic squibs are not always possible or practical to use, due to time & budget constraints or where real buildings and/or locations make it impractical or impossible to deploy pyrotechnics.

Our extremely popular alternative to Pyrotechnic squibs, are one of Hollywood's best kept SFX secrets.  Commonly referred to as a "Sweeney Gun" after it's inventor Matt Sweeney (the actual Sweeney Gun provides variable shooting rates, enabling matching of fire rates of various automatic weapons). The Gun we supply, is a based around a Milsig Mag-fed semi or full auto (constant rate of fire) marker, firing our in-house capsules "hit-balls".   When fired against a hard surface, these "hit-balls" break on impact releasing dust for example, producing a very convincing wall hit, with little to no setup or reset times.
Offering a budget-friendly solutions for set or location "squib style" hits (cost per hit, is much lower than pyrotechnics), for when ultra quick setups and re-sets are required on location when requiring hit effects on buildings, cars, tanks, planes, oil-drums, windscreens, windows etc..

Single or rapid fire hits/ricochets can be achieved on any hard surface.  With our 19 round magazine, we can fire up to 19 shots before changing mag.... more than sufficient for simulating hits from multiple guns or hits from an automatic weapon for example. We can also load capsules "hit-balls" with different fillings to provide a specific sequence of hits in a single take.

The secret to the success of the effect are our custom loaded capsules "hit-balls"  (also known in the industry as Hollywood balls, spark balls, zirc balls & Sweeney Balls) which we fill with various mixes of materials that have prepared by our props technicians to simulate realistic hits on many different surface materials
  • Mortar - using greys or black powder hits
  • Plaster - using white or grey powder hits
  • Brick - using red or brown powder hits
  • Metal surface - using the best sparking & hot sparking hits available
  • Glass windscreen/windows - using our unique shattering gel hits
Powder Hits - Typically used as hits on walls.  These are filled with our own mix of coloured powders (typically, white, grey, black, red, brown) that best match the sort of dust fragments that would be produced when a real bullet hits different types of wall construction materials.

Sparking Hits - Our Sparking hits are insanely impressive, providing sparks on impact.
Typically used when hits are required on metal objects such as cars, oil drums, dumpsters, skips, shipping containers etc..  We supply two different type, sparking and hot sparking, where the hot sparking is just a larger spark effect, better for simulating larger calibre bullet hits.

Glass Gel Hits - These hits provide a super cost effective solution to give the impression of bullet hits on glass, windscreens etc.. Upon impact, the capsule shatters and further fragments of safe simulated small glass fragments can be seen blowing out from the impact.  After impact, the window is left with a "splat" of opaque gel and a black mark, which when viewed as part of a fast moving action sequence, is sufficient to sell the idea of the glass being punctured & cracked by a bullet... Give the glass a quick wipe with a rag and it's ready for a re-take...

NB The impact and sparks can potentially dent metal and scorch paintwork.  Non-toughened glass may crack or break
IMPORTANT - NEVER use on people or animals
CONSIDERATIONS FOR USE:  Careful blocking and camera position planning must be carried out to enable our marksman to have unobstructed line of site to the impact area, keeping cast and crew out of the firing-line of the impact area. Although these balls are certainly not lethal, I definitely wouldn't want to be hit by one either!

Blood Capsule Launcher

Since the very first action movie, getting a bullet hit directly onto skin has been complex and generally very expensive and time consuming to achieve. Whilst with prosthetic make up or CGI it is possible to add a bullet hit to a bare arm or forehead, it takes a lot of time ... and camera tracking.

The secret that Hollywood have kept to themselves is the use of a specially made soft blood filled capsule that can be shot at close range to an actor using a low air pressure delivery method to blow a small wax capsule that breaks when it impacts on the actors bare skin, allowing the blood liquid contents inside to ooze out. The wax itself, because it's covered in the blood liquid, has the effect of adding a great "meaty" effect to the hit.

We manufacture our own capsules and our own delivery system to provide this extremely cost effective and quick to deploy and re-set..... just wipe it off the actor, touch up the makeup and hey-presto, you're ready to do another take/camera angle.

Our SFX technicians have considerable experience and time investment in perfecting their aim. With careful blocking and camera angles, you can get a one take shot of a bullet hit to the naked forehead. Why not add an AirFX Squib on the back of the head to allow a simultaneous spurt/splat of blood to simulate a entry and exit hit, all in the same take.....
